Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Alumni Scholarship

The Alumni Association of the School of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries, recognizing the need for recruiting quality students for careers in renewable natural resources management, established a scholarship fund in 1990 for the purpose of recruiting outstanding high school students into the School. The scholarship fund had meager beginnings but has grown at a steady pace. This year’s alumni contributions (mid 2002 - present) was $2,019.00.

A provision of the Alumni Scholarship fund raising drive allowed anyone contributing $20,000 over a 5-year period the privilege of naming the scholarship. One alumnus, Mr. John W. Lehman, class of 1934, made that contribution and as a result, one of the alumni scholarships bears his name. This is a separate scholarship.

John W. “Red” Lehman Forestry Scholarship

John W. “Red” Lehman, a native of New Orleans, received his Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree from Louisiana State University in 1934. Following graduation from LSU, he was employed as a forester by the Tennessee Valley Authority one year after it had been established as a Federal corporation to develop and manage the water and adjacent land resources of the Tennessee Valley region.

Mr. Lehman spent his entire professional career with the TVA in the Division of Forestry. He pioneered much of the cooperative effort and policy for the management of the Valley’s forest resources. When he retired from TVA, he was Assistant Chief, Division of Forestry. He died in October 1998.

The Lehman Forestry Scholarship was established from funds which he contributed to the School of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Alumni Scholarship Fund.

The 2002 recipient of the John H “Red” Lehmann Scholarship is Craig Thomas Gothreaux.
