DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN WILDLIFE & FISHERIES

The Ph.D. in Wildlife & Fisheries offers students substantial flexibility to pursue research and training in the great breadth of disciplines that encompass renewable natural resources.  Recent students have worked on research that focuses on birth and death processes for fish or wildlife populations, population genetics, especially of small populations, endangered species management, measurements of survival, habitat use, or population size, and movements of segments of fish or wildlife populations.  As with most Ph.D. programs, students will work closely with their graduate advisor to design, undertake and finally publish a body of original research that demonstrates their mastery of the scientific method.  Course work is tailored to the needs of the student given their interests and their job goals.  Many students take several classes in other strong departments on campus, especially Experimental Statistics and Biological Sciences.  Most recent students that earned their Ph.D. have taken jobs with agencies, though some have taken jobs at academic institutions or NGOs.

Coursework

A student must be certified as qualified, and a "Program of Study" approved by the advisory committee and submitted to the Graduate School, before registering for dissertation credit. The "Program of Study" will include coursework based on the chosen major and minor disciplines, area of interest in research, previous coursework, and performance on the qualifying exam. The "Program of Study" must have written approval of the full advisory committee.

A minimum of 48 semester hours of graduate credits (exclusive of credits in WILD or FISH 8000, 8900, and 9000) plus 9 credits for dissertation research (WILD or FISH 9000) are required. At least 3 hours of graduate level courses in the alternate discipline are required for Ph.D. students in wildlife, natural fisheries, or aquaculture (e.g., a wildlife course for fisheries Ph.D. students). Transfer credits from accredited institutions are acceptable for credit in the Ph.D. program. The following core courses must be completed, or evidence of their equivalency determined by the full advisory committee:

RNR 4011 - Wildlife Management Techniques (3 hrs)

RNR 4025 - Limnology (3 hrs)

RNR 4040 - Fisheries Management (4 hrs)

RNR  7001 - Research Methodology (3 hrs)

RNR 7013 - Wildlife Population Dynamics (3 hrs)

EXST 7005 - Statistical Techniques I (4 hrs)

EXST 7015 - Statistical Techniques II (4 hrs)

School of Renewable Natural Resources! We think that you will truly appreciate higher education in Graduate School. It can be enjoyable, productive, and rewarding, if you make the most of your opportunities. If you are enrolled in Graduate School, you must fulfill all requirements established by the Dean and the Graduate School for completion of your degree. Faculty in the School of Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) supervise all phases of your academic work and report to the Dean of the Graduate School on your progress. The School has additional
requirements that you must meet to graduate. It is your responsibility to become familiar with all regulations and requirements that pertain to your work as an enrolled graduate student.
