2012 Forestry Conclave in Raleigh a Success

Ten students from the LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources left for North Carolina the evening of Wednesday, March 14 to meet forestry students from thirteen other southern forestry schools and compete in the 55th Annual Southern Forestry Conclave held on the campus of North Carolina State University. The convoy for the long trip consisted of three vehicles – a van and two pickup trucks. One truck carried a really precious cargo – a box containing axes, saws, chain tapes, etc., a crawfish boiler, and four sacks of crawfish. The students were determined to bring some hospitality along and pass a good time.

Attending were: Dexter Courville, Jeffrey Sanders, Paige O'Malley, Nicole Krieg, Kasie Dugas, Logan Boudreaux, Jake Barron, Abbey Raaphorst, Cullen Foley and Taylor Simoneaux. Dr. de Hoop attended as faculty advisor.

Funding that allowed LSU to go attend Conclave came from Christmas tree sales, the School of RNR, Downtown Kiwanis, Slaughter Logging LLC, Joel Sanders Inc., and Timber Source Group LLC. Many thanks, all!!!

As we were setting up our tents Thursday afternoon, we were introduced to some campus bureaucracy. Crawfish boilers were considered an open flame, and that was a deal killer. But after some phone calls and inviting the Fire Marshall to the boil, we were issued permit #12-1492. After a dinner of North Carolina barbeque (opinions varied), the propane was lit. Forestry students from all over the South came to our camp to exchange tales. We even met a senior from Florida who will be working in Livingston, LA, upon graduation.
