Fall of 2006, students once again enrolled in Dr. King and Dr. Nyman’s “Management and Restoration of Wetland Function” course visited numerous natural, managed, and restored wetlands.  Field trips in that class are based upon on-site discussions with managers at various wetlands managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and The Nature Conservancy.  A crucial part of that course consists of a five-day field trip down the Texas coast to the Rio Grande River. “We could travel twice as far to the east but we wouldn’t see as much wetland variety because of the tremendous gradients in rainfall and river discharge between the Mississippi River and the Rio Grande River” says Dr. King.
