RNR Students at
Discover Day 2017

LSU Discover, a program under the LSU Office of Academic Affairs, promotes and supports undergraduate research and creative opportunities to students from all disciplines at LSU. With a focus on information literacy, original ideas, research methods, research ethics, and communication, the LSU Discover program strives to provide a supportive environment where all undergraduate students can engage in mentored research and creative endeavors.

Discover Day 2017 was a huge success. Nearly 200 students presented their research and creative projects, and well over 400 visitors attended the event and voted for their "Tiger's Choice."

Students in RNR will well-represented and took home several awards for the day.

RNR PhD students Awarded
Dissertation Year Fellowships

Two LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources Ph.D. students, Songjie He (left) and Kristin DeMarco (right), were recently awarded 2017-18 Dissertation Year Fellowships. These fellowships are very competitive with a large pool of high-quality applicants.

Ms. He’s works under the direction of Dr. Yi-jun Xu. Her dissertation is titled Changes in Carbon, Nutrient, and Trace Metal Concentrations during the Transition from Freshwater to Marine Environments – A Case Study in Southwest Louisiana.

Ms. DeMarco’s dissertation is titled: Changing conditions in the northern Gulf of Mexico coastal landscape: submerged aquatic vegetation community response to changes in salinity and climate. Ms. DeMarco is from Dr. Megan LaPeyre’s laboratory.

Congratulations to Songjie and Kristin!!

LEEC Research Grants Awarded

Congratulations to Bo Wang and Jeremy Reiman for each being awarded the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission’s (LEEC) University Research Grant. Bo and Jeremy are working in Dr. Jun Xu’s laboratory. These are competitive awards that will help Bo and Jeremy support their dissertation research.

Student Invited to 2017 Schweighofer Workshop

Dr. Gilbert OtotoGilbert Ototo, A Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Richard Vlosky in the School of Renewable Natural Resources at LSU, has been invited to participate in the prestigious Schweighofer Student Workshop for 2017.

Forty graduate students from around the world in various programs in forestry and forest-based sectors are invited annually to participate. The workshop is organized by Professor Alfred Teischinger, at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria.

2017 Student Research Grant Awarded

Vitek Jirinec, Grad Student in RNRCongratulations to Vitek Jirinec, a recipient of the 2017 Student Research Grant from the Animal Behavior Society. The $1,500 grant along with a $4,000 Conservation Grant he received from the Neotropical Bird Club a few weeks earlier will cover supplies for his research in the Brazilian Amazon.

Vitek is a Ph.D. student in Dr. Phil Stouffer’s lab studying microhabitat requirements of tropical understory birds and how those relate to documented bird declines over the last few decades. The research requires external funding to collect data from sensors placed both on birds and their environment.

RNR Grad Student Wins Distinguished Dissertation Award

Kunlin Song(right), a recent PhD graduate from RNR (under the direction of Dr. Qinglin Wu, left) is the recipient of this year's LSU Alumni Association Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering & Technology with his dissertation: Application of Biomass in Nanocomposites and Drilling Fluids.

The winning dissertation demonstrated a mastery of research techniques, ability to do original and independent research, and skill in formulating conclusions that in some way enlarge upon or modify accepted idea and most importantly contribute to knowledge.

In 2015, Kunlin won a prestigious second place Wood Award given to the best graduate research papers by the Forest Products Society. Kunlin’s work has been published in Fuel, Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Colloids and Surface A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, and Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering.

Congratulations, Kunlin!
