  • FAMILY: PODOCARPACEAE
  • ALTERNATE COMMON NAME:
  • LEAVES: alternate, simple, evergreen; lanceolate, acute or obtuse, parallel venation, coriacious; dark green above, pale below
  • FLOWER: dioecious, male catkin; female inconspicuous
  • FRUIT: oval, 1/2 inch; green to purple
  • TWIGS:
  • BARK:
  • FORM: small tree, pyramidal crown; 25 feet tall
  • HABITAT: urban; does poorly on heavy clay soils
  • RANGE: native of east Asia
  • USES: ornamental
    • Best Recognition Features:
    1. lanceolate, parallel venation, coriacious leaves
    2. leaves dark green above, pale below
    3. fruit is oval, 1/2 inch diameter, purple

    NOTES: true yews are in the genus Taxus
